Will get more info tonight hopefully. So, according to them (which I doubt) we have 10-12 booths broken into and there supposedly was a number of kids. Even so, if that be the case, then where were the security guards? A bunch of kids breaking into a dozen booths and you don't see them scurrying around the place? The story does not wash!!! Not believeable.

Have emailed the reporter with more information. I think the thing that bothered me the most was the "promoters" saying basically what do you expect with where the booths are set up? Excuse me, didn't they have the booths set up there or is Whiskey Flats one that you show up and pitch your canopy where you want it? <---- I DOUBT it!!!!! I hope other promoters learn from this!!!

Better yet, here's the article itself:
Whiskey Flat Days Marred by Vendor Thefts Nearly A Dozen Vendors Stolen From Over Weekend KERNVILLE, Calif. -- It is one of the most popular events to attend in the Kern County mountains, But this weekend's Whiskey Flat Days events has been marred, a bit, by theft. The Kern County Sheriff's Department is looking into ten to 12 reports of merchandise being stolen from vendors in Kernville. Event organizers had heard that up to 21 vendors had said items were stolen this weekend.
Those items include skateboards, cowboy hats and even fudge. Organizers believe kids may be behind the thefts and the sheriff's department agrees. Organizers say security has always been a struggle because its not the most secure location with vendors being outdoors on the streets, but they're always trying to make it better and more secure. The sheriff's department says a couple thousand dollars worth of merchandise was stolen.

I'd like to hear what people who were there have to say about it. Whatever the situation was, it is terribly disgusting that something like this could ever happen. Why don't they get boy scouts next year? They are (supposedy) honorable, trustworthy, courteous, etc. Give them each a flaslight and an AK-47 and I am sure there will be no problems.

Wonder if they had the Sheriffs Department Reserves or the Citizen Volunteers there? I know for a fact that the Sheriffs Department budget would not cover Deputies there for the four days acting as security. Maybe Kernville needs to hire some real security and give the vendors a little peace of mind. From seeing all of this, I do know that this one show that I will be passing on in the future!
As far as boy scouts... who needs them? Get members of Starving Vendors as security and there would be no problems!!!! Susie

Whiskey Flat Days has alot of problems. The vendor booths in the middle of the park can't be seen from the surrounding streets, and anyone can simply walk in and disappear, free to slip under the sidewalls of any booth. There is absolutely no security. Sheriff's deputies make a huge scene of towing away vehicles Saturday morning in the no parking zone, and are around during the day, but that's all. The only people making money at Whiskey Flat Days are the restuarants and the Chamber of Commerce. The booth fee is far too high - nearly no locals sell there because of this. The reputation for rowdiness persists, because locals avoid Kernville and many actually leave the Valley to spend the weekend in a better place. And there's no way on God's Green Earth that 60,000 people were there. There weren't 60,000 in the entire Kern River Valley, residents and pets included.

I agree with you 100% on Whiskey Flats. Isn't it amazing how these deputies are towing away cars on Saturday morning. Wouldn't this be just after over 30 vendor's found their booths broken into? Of course, they collect the fines paid by the people whose cars they towed away. Maybe this is truly one place we have to recommend our fellow vendor's to avoid. Bad news there. Was your booth broken into? I am not too sure if you are aware that more than two dozen vendor's had stuff ripped off early Saturday. Different stories here.... most of the people say that they saw them take away 3 security guards (inside job) and other's are under the impression that a 'bunch of kids' did it. At least that is what the news media is reporting. Please feel free to tell us more about the event. Thank you.
