i wonder if anyone has shown or go to show in tuscon end jan to early feb., 2009 ( this year show will be end jan to early feb 2010. i look at the internet, there are about 10 shows during that period of times, 1 in convention center, the rest either in hotel, ... i am still reading it and i only heard about it before has not even visit there. do any of you show your products there? or do any of you go and buy merchandises for your business? i read the show, and the hotel are crazy, the room during that time are $200 + even the motel are double the price. .... for a 10 days show, one show ask for $700 a 10X10 booth.

I'd shop around more ... $200/night sounds awfully steep! Check with any of the promoters of the shows you're considering if they've worked out any discounts with local hotels/motels as well...
If you don't mind driving a few miles check out neighboring Oro Valley, Green Valley, Marana, etc. You can get much cheaper rates, although a quick Travelocity search for that time period in Tuscon I've found a few decent places for $120+..... bet Priceline could match 'em or maybe do better too.

I think this is the Tucson Gem Show you are talking about mostly wholesale but some retail events. All hotels triple in price but you can find accommodation on the Old Benson Highway - not the Ritz - these are old motels that charge by the week e.g. $250.00 to $275.00 so not the greatest but check some of them out if you are looking for a place to stay. Also the Old Benson Hwy. is close to the Holidome (Holiday Inn Show) and several other shows. check out G.L. & W. shows and J.O.G.S. they run some of the events at the Gem Show.

Welcome to the forum. Where are you from? I have never sold at any of the February Tucson Shows, but I have gone there to buy several years ago, Motels are definitely hard to find, so we have stayed quite a ways west of the City. A lot of the motels (along the highway) are rented out to vendors. Have you ever sold there?

Hi Dave,
I too have bought items at the Tucson Show but never sold there. Mostly dealt with wholesalers from Italy, France, Australia and of course U.S.A. Our aim is to buy when we attend this show although I know of several people who sell retail at the Electric Park venue some years good this year in February a lot less money around. I am orignially from Scotland but am part of the local artisans market in Penticton B.C. Canada (Okanagan Valley Region) Came across you webpage and am very interested in what is happening in California etc. and of course the effect of the economy has on your local markets.
We have seen vast changes in our local market a lot less American tourists but we still get Europeans visiting. I think everyone is too afraid to part with any cash they have on hand but do think we will just have to wait this time out. We go to more shows that cost less to attend and it seems to work for us.
Enjoying your web page and the great input you have in your forums.

Most of us are located in California - Bakersfield, Hayward, San Jose, Coarsegold, Rosamond, San Diego and other cities. Also, Coos Bay, OR and Arizona. Very interested in hearing about your experiences and sales up there in B.C. I have been up your way many times. Beautiful. Kelowna, Penticton, Revelstoke, etc. In 2003, we drove up to Alaska also and have taken several trips over to the Rockies...Banff, Icefields, Jasper, etc. I love it up there, but can not afford any more trips up there. Fantastic memories. Once again, welcome to the board. I hope you find as much enjoyment as the rest of us had corresponding with fellow vendors, promoters and editors of craft show publications. Best of luck to you. After reading what people have to say on the forum, I guess that you can conclude that things are pretty tough around here. In some areas, the shows are half-ways decent, but mostly every event is down for virtually all the vendors. This has truly been a rough year. Sales seem to be a bit better in Oregon and decent in certain parts of Arizona. Hopefully, we can get more input from people in other areas. Hope you enjoy reading the Starving Vendor's website.
