I'm waiting for Dave to come out with a book on all the crazy situations he's seen over the years at the street fests and fairs. He could easily put together a book on this one subject.
Not sure if I posted this one already, but some crazy stuff happened to me at the 2009 Salinas Valley Fair in King City last May. This turned out to be one of the worst fairs I ever did. The only prosperous portion of the whole 4 days was Saturday night, starting at around 4pm. It got pretty packed with people around my small booth, especially teenagers. I was busy drawing, when all of a sudden, these two teenage boys start wrestling each other a few feet away from me. There was this really old water faucet/pipe sticking up 3 ft. out of the ground, also a few feet away from me. So, one kid pushes the other back-first into the pipe and breaks it. Water comes gushing out, filling up the entire lawn area quickly. I thought, "why me again," as I quicky had to move my stuff out of the way. I told some kid I'd draw her a free caricature if she'd run over to the promoter's area and tell them what happened. So, a few of the fair's maintenance guys come running over and see the water just gushing out like crazy. One guy asked me, "what happened?" and I told him a couple teenagers started wrestling and broke it. He then asked me "why did you let them?" Unbelievable. So, I'm the one in charge of all the teenagers there? It took them about 20 min., but they finally fixed the pipe and I was able to continue with the dreaded fair. Also, they heavily advertised a White Tiger show for all 4 days which was supposed to be in my general area. I guess it was canceled all 4 days, as people continually asked me over 3 days where the White Tiger show was, and I told them I didn't know. I packed up Sat. night when it closed, and DID NOT return on Sunday, preferring to escape with the small profit I made, and not returning in the 100+ degree heat. King City and the small surrounding towns are very poor and no spending power. Plus its an hour away from Salinas, the largest town in the area. Beats me why they hold this fair in King City, especially during a recession. They also competed with the Castroville Artichoke Festival (big turnout) and the Monster Truck Races at Salinas Fairgrounds on the same weekend. Big mistake.
