On Sunday we shall be doing the Niles Flea Market in Fremont, CA. I have been wanting (sort of) to do this show for years but I always had a two-day show. Last year we did the Grover Beach Stone Soup Festival and it was bad.
This is a popular event in this area and I have heard good things about it, but the economy is really bad and I don't know what to expect. This show is not in an economically-disadvantaged area so I could do halfways decent. Only problem is that we have to set up at 4:00AM. Yes, no typo. That is four-o'clock in the morning..... before the sun arrives. I hate setting up in the dark. '

How long you need to set up your display? can you finish your display in 2 hours? who come at 6:00am to a flea market? most likely looking for used junk good deal? is this flea market same as a regular flea market which mostly sell used junk? I imagine that there are quite a few 'antiques' there and not really much flea market junk. Niles has several antique stores located along its main street. I don't like this 6:00am stuff-too early for me and I certain there will be a lot of customers walking around in the dark before it opens. These people want to find the good deals before everybody else does. I heard about this event many years ago but I have always had a show on that weekend that it's held. I don't think that my stuff is appropriate for this event nor is it for any other one. Take in mind that the booth fee for this is $150 per 10x10 space. Expensive for a flea market. I'll give it a try and if I don't do good, I'll never ever come back. By the way, how are things coming along in Colorado? Are you going to Arizona in January? I am not going there to Tyson Wells. I don't feel like dealing with that windy, rainy weather (and cheap snowbirds). I have no shows here in California either, so I might have to find something in February or March. Hope it's not too wet.

i had already paid for 2 shows in Tyson wells ( Rock and Gem, and Sell-a-rama ), i do ok last year. i lost my new tent, and i do have some water damage on my merchandises, but i manage to salvage the beads from those rust parts and remake them into jewelry again. i learn my lessons as i can lower the tent, and unload all hanging beads on table and tie the tent more securely then the tent can be saved. or i can load everything except the display to my car and then the tent and the equipment can be saved too. i am making little money in Colorado Springs after my food, my rent, my gas here and i have tried different farmer markets, flea markets, county fair, rock and gem shows in the near by areas, and there are some money to make here. the best business is produce, bread, food, and food related business, crafts are doing ok but not great. the only i have not tried or i am not ready to try to do is Colorado State fair or Colorado Taste or Colorado Ballon festival, ... those big show that cost $800 - $1500 a show. good luck to your nile flea market. i hope you make some money. So you are doing the first two shows in Tyson? Do you have the same spot in the Sell-a-Rama that you had this year? It's very hard to give up my space that I have there. I hope that the weather is better. They had three bad storms in Tyson this past year. The first storm was in September and another in December. There were canopies toppled over and flooding. Hard to believe that the snowbirds will be arriving at Rice Ranch in 2-3 more months. I think that a lot of people might have gotten scared away after what happened. For a couple years I had a big 5th Wheel RV next to my space and that blocked out most of the wind. If that was there this January, my canopies might not have been toppled over. I don't think that the guy selling socks in the space in back of mine is coming back (Y-19) I think that the Y row might get the most wind because it's facing the wind and there are no motor homes there to stop the wind. I wish that I could have done some shows in Colorado during the summer. We have traveled to all 50 states and it's one of my favorites. I hope that there is more money to be made out there for you. Winter is just around the corner over there. i had already paid for 2 shows in Tyson wells ( Rock and Gem, and Sell-a-rama ), i do ok last year. i lost my new tent, and i do have some water damage on my merchandises, but i manage to salvage the beads from those rust parts and remake them into jewelry again. i learn my lessons as i can lower the tent, and unload all hanging beads on table and tie the tent more securely then the tent can be saved. or i can load everything except the display to my car and then the tent and the equipment can be saved too. i am making little money in Colorado Springs after my food, my rent, my gas here and i have tried different farmer markets, flea markets, county fair, rock and gem shows in the near by areas, and there are some money to make here. the best business is produce, bread, food, and food related business, crafts are doing ok but not great. the only i have not tried or i am not ready to try to do is Colorado State fair or Colorado Taste or Colorado Ballon festival, ... those big show that cost $800 - $1500 a show. good luck to your nile flea market. i hope you make some money.

yes, i am only doing the first 2 shows only. half of the third show overlapped with the Tuscon show, it will never be good. it will be good after the Tuscon show is over. i do not have the same space. i wait until the last day when i packed up everything and before go home to pay for the space. my first show space for was taken by someone, so i have to move one space up next to packaging guide who has a trailer and dog there. on the second show last time, the masseger guide behind me left, the korean guide who sell the mop left and the guide right next to me left too so i have no wind blocker at all, and my tent does not move but bended only because i have much loaded on them. this time i am not on the first row, i am on the second booth of second row ( X row ) which is behind the carpet guide that i think he also paid for his space. i think the carpet guide will learn his lessons and build a stronger tent this year. i do not think the snowbird will scare about any storm at all. it is what it is. compared with buried under the snow and cannot go out their home for a week or 10 days, half day or one day rain is not that bad. Colorado Springs are bad when it rain, it is rain, thunderstorm, hail, all the same in 20 - 30 mins times, it is scary. there are some nice shows in the area, they cost about $30 - $50 sometime $75 a day and they need liscenses, liability insurance, juried, application fee, ..... but those customer are a different class and need something more precious. but my craft skills need more improvement before i can go to that kind of shows. may be next year. what i doing now is $7 - $20 a show so, and i can pay my tax through them using their liscenses and i do not have to get a liscense on each city and file my own tax return, and it save me times. i am ok with what i have made so far. it is not much but for a first time farmer market seller, first time Ezup alone ( my tent was set up by a professional in Quartzsite last year ), first time to Colorado Springs, 7000 ft above sea level, find a home to stay, finding different shows, knowing different people, making little money after all cost, ...... when i sold in the markets, i have seen other especially the crafters not doing so good in market. it is the economy, people are not spending much money like they used to. 5 - 6 years ago, they buy expensive toys, a lot of things and now, they watch what they buy and they budget what they buy. We did the Niles Antique Faire and Flea Market on Sunday. Loads of antiques (?) there along with a small number of regular vendors. Arrived there at 4:20am but had to wait in line until 5:00. Sales were very slow for most of the morning - who the hell is going to look for my stuff at 6:00 in the morning? You can read my review and have a few laughs or maybe shed some tears or add money to my Paypal account!!! www.starvingvendors.com/events_Niles_Flea_Market_2010.html

We did the San Jose Italian Festival this past weekend....this was its 1st year in this new location....very hard loadin in this Park...only had one narrow road in and out ......i waited about 45 mins to load out on Sunday....in all fairness the people working with the vendors were great trying to help us as much as they could...... The crowd was lower then last year....maybe 50 percent.....my sales were half of what i expected......people just not buying.this economy is really killing us all.........i will most likey return to this event next year......wish it would return to its old location in Willow Glen........
