Even though this was widely known for awhile to vendors, I consider it newsworthy information for all vendors. Might be happening with other shows, so beware
April 15, 2009 San Jose Cancels Annual Fireworks Festival
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- The economy is claiming another victim. The annual 4th of July fireworks show in San Jose, has been cancelled due to lack of funding.
Last year the show in Discovery Meadow drew more than 150,000 people, but event producer Fil Maresca says public and private funding has fizzled because of the sour economy.
”It’s always struggled. It’s never been a big money making event,” said Maresca. “It’s a huge event attendance-wise, but monetarily it’s not a huge event.”
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed echoed the feelings of many in the community.
“I’m really disappointed that we’re not going to have fireworks downtown for Independence Day on the Fourth of July, it’s part of our traditional celebrations, and it’s always a lot of fun. But the economy is dragging it down, and the double whammy of decreasing local tax revenues and lack of sponsorships has made this a casualty of the economy,” said Reed.
Not only the fireworks, but the entire three-day San Jose America Festival is being cancelled
