I couldn't think of anyplace else to post this on the forum. Probably need a special category/topic for stuff like this:
Was doing my walk-about at the Fall Festival and was leaving the food area. There was a lady handing out flyers advertising a Geek Festival....whoops..... I'm sorry, a Greek Festival. My friend took one from the lady. I didn't. As we walked away, I asked him to let me read it and it was for a show they were having someplace in C.V. I saw mention of the word 'vendors.' Hey, that's me, I thought to myself. The festival was being held on the first weekend of October and I needed a local event. I walked back over to the lady and asked her about the show's vendors.
IMPORTANT: Please picture a person with an Indian sounding Greek accent speaking.
"Yah, it's a nice event and we are expecting a lot of people. We are having a COUPLE VENDORS this year." (Oh wow....you're going to have a couple vendors...I hope that's not too many) I looked at her, batting my eyes not believing what I had just heard. This sounds like a very interesting story coming up. "Yah. We are going to try to have a couple vendors at our show to try it out. What do you sell?" I then told her what we sold, of course. "How much are spaces?" Make sure you are sitting down when I tell you. Take a deep breath...exhale. Here goes... "Five hundred dollahs." No further questions were necessary. Just two words were all I needed to say. "GOOD BYE." Wow, they are having a festival and are 'experimenting' with a thing called 'vendors' AND they are charging $500 for a space. Sorry, Petrovagopulous, you are not experimenting with me for $500. If you PAID ME $600 to come to your show, then I would. SOBE IT for that idea.
IMPORTANT: If they ever got serious, but believe me, they never will and it's a lost cause, they should schedule their event during a weekend when they could get 'real vendors.' They would need to schedule it on a weekend when there are few shows around for vendors to go to in the area, namely the second and third weekends. Don't charge $500 when somebody could go to Manteca and pay $150 (or whatever) and acheive greater (small. either way) success. I'd go to Morro Bay or Elk Grove before shelling out $500 to them just for the show. If you don't know anybody, hire a promoter. There's plenty of greedy promoters out there who will think nothing of exploiting your show and will find enough naive vendors nonetheless
