What do people have going in February?

I don't have anything scheduled for February yet. I was just wondering if anybody out there did the Holtville Carrot Festival or is going to do it (Feb 12-13, 2011)? Quite a long haul from the Bay Area and too close to the Mexican border. I believe they got some rain there and I heard that there were a number of booth break-ins. Seems like February is National Booth Break into month? Recall that 15-35 booths were broken into at Whiskey Flats this year and vendors need to really voice concerns about security at both these events. As for Holtville, heard that they get a good sized crowd there on Saturday because of the parade. As for Sunday, few people come out. I have never done this event. If you are local there or a van sleeper than your expenses are much lower than those of us who would have to motel-it. In other words, if you have to travel and spend a couple nghts in Motel Rinky Dink, forget it.
I really haven't heard much good about this event and there is little in Craftmaster (one review 3 yrs ago). I learned a lesson from Taft Oilderado Days. The Carrot Festival runs over two weekends, which means that people there have spent most of their money by the time the vendors come in on weekend#2. That's what happened in Taft. The show ran over two weekends and people spent their money at the car show the weekend before and then during the week at whatever festivities they had going on. Something to think about when booking shows (excluding fairs).

Where is Holtville, Dave? Down by San Diego? Laura It's just off of Highway 8, maybe 10 miles East of El Centro AND 15 miles North of Mexicali. 120+ miles from San Diego. I have passed that way on trips to Yuma. Not much out there. Some people said it was okay a few year's back but with the economy going sour, the show has suffered. I can't picture spending $160 on gas, $130 on motel along with the booth fee just to make $2-300 on Saturday (at most) and likely under $100 on Sunday. Always a chance of rain, but most likely dry down there.

Call me "No Fun", but it is too close to the Mexico border for my comfort. Just too much happening to push my luck. I have even shyed away from thoughts of Yuma, for the time being. Course you couldn't pay me to go to Indio and sell either. No matter how many movie stars you show me on the internet as going there!

Anybody out there doing Whiskey Flats next weekend? Supposed to get snow on 3 days. Looks like pretty bad weather. When the weather is nice, the people really come out for it. Best February show in California. Temps going down to around 25-27 degrees in the early AM. I have done the show 3-4 times, but no for a few years. Motels are expensive. Good luck to Jim and the other van sleepers. Supposedly there are outlets for electric blankes on the business side of the park. Brrrrrr.

Is there anybody out there planning on doing the Santa Clarita Street Fair. This is held in the parking lot of a junior college down there, so I tend to believe that it is a Flea Market. Booth fee is $99 for two days, so that is a hell of a lot for a Flea Market.

Looks like we might have good weather for this fiasco. Usually the weather is bad, but the 15 day forecast looks good. However, can you believe a weather forecast two weeks ahead of time. Horrible show, nonetheless. The carnival is where the money goes along with the people. Hopeless. You will not see me there. They have the parade downtown, 2 miles away from the actual event. After the parade, it's bye bye Balboni for many.

I'm tempted to try out Ted Holcomb's carnival shows down in LA. There is one Feb. 18-21st (4 days) in Pico Rivera, and the following one March 3rd thru the 6th (4 days) in Anaheim. You can see the long list of his shows at www.fiestadecarnival.comI'd like to do the Feb. show next weekend, but it looks like rain every day but Sunday. I'm sure his show will still go on, especially the carnival. I'm hoping for sure to do The Anaheim show, followed by a few of his others throughout this year.

I'm still trying to decide if Something is really better than Nothing, when it's so painful.
